This year’s jury, consisting of comics artist, theorist and publicist Iztok Sitar, multidisciplinary artist and assistant professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Matej Stupica, and critic, publicist and editor Veronika Šoster, selected the nominees from more than 70 comic book releases that were published between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022.

The winners were announced at Kino Šiška on Saturday, 8 October 2022.

The Zlatirepec 2022 Awards are financially supported by the Slovenian Book Agency.

A quirky comic about a little vampire who is so bored that he goes to a human school, where he will undoubtedly find some new friends, wins the reader over with its unpredictability and slightly gallows humour, as befits a creature of the night with pointy incisors. The contrasting and vivid colours in combination with night-time scenes appear almost virulent, and the story of an unusual friendship is told through a prism of identity, loss, origin and rebelliousness.

With Lahko noč, sine, Izar Lunaček impresses with his witty, playful and lively improvisation of inventing and telling fairy tales. His drawings follow suit, freewheeling around in different colour atmospheres and creatively designed comic book characters. The freshness and thoroughness of Lunaček’s approach brought out only the best from the author; he does not belittle either young or old readers, thereby confirming that children have to be the most demanding and valuable audience.

The second volume of Blast is a real visual experience, a triumph of combining the subtle and the barbaric. Murder suspect Polza Mancini is still confessing to interrogators and reliving his pursuit of new blasts, with gruesome and brutal scenes mixing with poetic and philosophical musings, making the work complex and vivid – so vivid that sudden bursts of colour into the otherwise black-and-white world cause a kind of euphoria. Unforgettable and apocalyptic all the way.

Slovenian comics uomo universale, TonTon, TBC, Lovro Matič, Josip Visarijonovič and all his other styles and faces hit the mark once again. With hundreds of comics translations of essential works of Slovenian culture, he once again demonstrated his variety and mastery of diversity, as well as his mastery in understanding comics. Over a large span of time, he tackled both pop culture and ancient folklore with equal fervour. The long-awaited second part deserves to sweep away the admittedly tough competition.
