Peter Kuper (1958) is an extremely prolific American comics artist and illustrator, also known for his socio-political engagement. He publishes his works in various publications around the world, including The New Yorker and MAD. In 1979, he co-founded the political comics magazine World War III Illustrated and remains a member of its editorial board to this day. He is the author of many high-profile books – in 2016, he won the prestigious Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album for Ruins. He also adapted several classic literary works into comics: in a Slovenian translation, we can read his collection of comics stories Kafkaesque, based on various short stories by the modernist giant Franz Kafka, and the comic book Metamorphosis, also based on Kafka’s short story, and Heart of Darkness, an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel of the same name. He has taught comics at the School of Visual Arts in New York for thirty years and is a visiting professor at Harvard.

Last year, we were able to admire the author’s original comics at the exhibition Metamorphoses in the Vodnik Homestead Gallery, and this year Kuper will finally join us live in Ljubljana! He will speak about his work at a lecture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design and at a Saturday conversation at Kino Šiška, where he will also sign his books.

Peter Kuper is one of the world’s comics masters. In addition, he is a highly engaged artist with an emphasized ethical note and, in addition to entertaining and personal comic books, also makes socially critical comics and comic book adaptations of literary classics. He publishes regularly in Stripburger magazine, and several of his books have already been published in Slovenian. He will talk with Bojan Albahari, translator, comics reviewer and member of the Stripburger editorial staff. The conversation will be held in English.
