LE DERNIER CRI

The bold provocation of the comics and graphic art underground!

The famous underground French graphic publisher Le Dernier Cri, based in Marseille, focuses on publishing various graphic monographs (including comics) and all kinds of prints, occasionally producing animated and feature films as well. The publisher’s programme draws on the rich tradition of the underground, the Art Brut, and various subcultures. Its protagonists mostly came out of the French (Parisian) punk scene of the 1980s and 1990s, but later involved many international authors as well. The label specialises in screen prints; its publications are characterised by the use of extremely vibrant colours, a peculiar sensuality and interest in details – a conscious reliance on the tradition of Art Brut aesthetics, applied to the fields of comics, illustration and animation. The characteristic iconography that comes from this publishing house is based on images that are both seductive and repulsive, which ultimately also applies to the content itself, which is not lacking in provocation.

The opening of the exhibition Mondo DC, which will present the rich history and production of Le Dernier Cri, will be accompanied by a visual and audio treat at the Metelkova studio of the collective Grejpfrut, directed by Slovenian artist Vasja Lebarič.
