BENJAMIN RENNER

A fun world of animal adventures in comics and on screen

French comic artist and animator Benjamin Renner (born 1983) first rose to fame in 2012 with his animated feature Ernest & Celestine (Ernest et Célestine), a heartwarming tale about a bear and a mouse that won a César Award and earned an Oscar nomination. Animal protagonists also populate Renner’s comic book creations: his comic book The Big Bad Fox (Le Grand Méchant Renard), which will be released in Slovenian by Stripolis during the Tinta festival, was named Best Children’s Comic at the Angoulême Festival in 2015. Renner later adapted it into another César Award-winning animated feature. Beyond humour, his comics and films are characterised by expressive, freehand drawing and delicate watercolour techniques, creating a sense of softness and warmth through fluid blends of colour.

With his exhibition at the Equrna Gallery, Renner will take us behind the scenes of the creative process that leads from comic book to animated film. His animated feature The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales will also be screened at the Slovenian Cinematheque. During Saturday’s comic fair at Kino Šiška, the artist will further explore the interplay between comics and animation in a dedicated masterclass.
